The workshop was organized to design the visual identity of the new Civic Library "Maria Tarditi" in Monesiglio: a flexible space with a rich and engaging history. Led by Ilaria Bossa from the MONO studio, the working group carried out in-depth research on the territory, its history, and its traditions to tailor a visual dress as accurate as possible for the library. The Civic Library is located in the former Filanda della Seta (silk mill): the epicenter of the social and cultural reconstruction of the Bormida Valley. Marela, in the Piedmontese language, means a skein of silk. Marela is a name that by assonance recalls Marì, the nickname of Maria Tarditi, a local writer who the library is dedicated. The name and logo pay homage to the female history of the place: the workers who worked in the mill for a century; the two authors (Maria Tarditi and Diodata Saluzzo of Monesiglio) who were born in Monesiglio, and the numerous volunteers who enthusiastically manage the library every day. A couple of screen printers and illustrators, Eugenio Nittolo and André Tognon of Laboratorio Zanna Dura, involved the community in an outdoor printing activity where the new logo and portraits of the two authors were screen-printed on paper and fabric. The new visual identity, particularly the logo, will identify the library outside the Filanda itself, through a glass decoration project designed by the graphic designer and illustrator Alice Lotti.
